Tribute to My Corkscrew

February 2, 2011 16 comments
You were a wonderful gift on the day of our wedding.
I opened you and knew where this relationship was heading.

A Screwpull Elegance Lever Model design
Made of metal and smarter than that dumb guy Einstein.

There wasn’t a bottle of wine or cork that you feared
You had great reviews and were truly revered.

We hit it off instantly, due to your skillful ways
I could work you bottle after bottle, without issue, for days.

You would never falter, I knew you wouldn’t fail
From Cakebread to Margaux to Merryvale.

You impressed the wine snobs and the corkscrew challenged
A replacement was never needed or scavenged.

You came with us each time that we moved homes
We brought you on vacation, never left you alone.

You were more than a tool, you were a close friend.
I thought are affair would never come to an end.

And then one day you stuck and required more force.
As I watched your demise, I become distraught of course.

I thought no one could ever fill your utilitarian shoes
I instantly started singing the dying corkscrew blues.

I knew not how long our partnership would last
Our days were numbered with every glass.

Then came the Syrah that broke you apart
When you jammed for good, it broke my heart.

Our substitute opener could not measure up
The time had come for me to act like a grownup-

To give up drinking wine, ha, you must be on glue
I jumped on the internet to find one just like you.

What? What? This could not be true.
You’re no longer made, well who can I sue?

But alas, I found a place that knows you are hailed
If I paid through the nose, your replacement will be mailed.

I did what I must, I paid the ransom they required
And in return I will get the Screwpull I desired.

It won’t be the same as what you and I had
But it will open the wine that I need so bad.

So the next glass we’ll toast you and your skill
I’ll never forget you, um… I probably will.

Pursey Galore

February 2, 2011 8 comments

Our regularly scheduled programming has been interrupted for this special report:

Through an amazing twist of fate and good luck, I will be hosting Pursey Galore in February as she traipses across the continent in order to raise money and awareness for The American Stroke Association.

Isn't she gawgeous?!

Many people don’t know that my father has been a Type I Diabetic since he was 4 years old.  Diabetes has caught up with him (warning this links to a heart-felt post I wrote about my dad) and he is only 64.  He has had triple bypass and suffers from a shot cardiovascular system.  He has TIA’s on a regular basis.  So when presented with an opportunity to support the American Stroke Association, I not only jumped at the chance, I bribed, cajoled and threatened purse napping!

I convinced Pursey’s owner, the lovely Lori at In Pursuit of Martha Points to ship her off to me, without a chaperone, for a long weekend in the snow with friends and 8 young children!

Pursey lives up to her sparkle and has had some wild adventures.  But is she ready for a trip with my crazy college friends and their children?  Will she be able to keep warm in the snow?  Will she ski or board?  Does she like Bailey’s and hot cocoa?  We’ll have to see…

And if there is time when we return, before I have to send her on to her next hostess, I will plan a PurseyPalooza  to subject Pursey to a little A LOT of Suburbia Silliness!

Get your rest my sparkly diva!  It’s going to be a wild ride!

Let My Friends Help You

One of the most amazing things about writing this blog is the other writers I have met either virtually or in real-life.  I cherish their friendships and talents.  I also love learning things from them that help make my life easier.  A few such lessons have stuck with me lately and I wanted to pass them on to you:

  • Coping with messesI am a bit of a neat freak.  I have OCD.  Sometimes when the kids make a mess I literally think steam is going to come out of my ears like a cartoon character.  Kelly over at Dances with Chaos takes pictures of her kids messes to laugh and blog about.  Even if you don’t write or blog, taking the picture to laugh about (or blackmail your kids with) really helps bring the situation down from DEFCON 1.
  • Know your role.  Blessing over at Working Mom Journal talks about our role of inspiring our children.  What a great reminder of thinking past homework and toothbrush enforcer.  Blessing shares 9 elements of how to inspire your children.
  • Tools to get you through the work day. Rene over at Grown Up for Real shared with her readers the Little Pink Book, career wisdom for women.  It’s short articles and videos for all of you, who like me, need career and life-enhancing tools.
  • If all else fails, just keeping up is a good day! Angie over at The Little Mumma reminds us that parenting is a bit like Groundhog Day and our accomplishments from yesterday don’t count for today, so just keeping up is great!

Do you have a helpful tip or sage advice?  I am listening and always in need of wisdom!
